Vintage Beams & Timbers Antique Mantle and Beams Package

Extreme Makeover, Home Edition demonstrates that the old-timey custom of neighbors helping neighbors has not disappeared.

"It was the experience of a lifetime," said Ed Knapp, President of Vintage Beams & Timbers, Inc. "It was very inspiring, since all of the materials we used in the project came from a 150 year old barn that had long outlasted it's usefulness as a barn, but the materials used to construct it were put there to last a life time. Extreme Makeover, Home Edition proves that this cooperative spirit lives on."

The challenge in a project of this type is to match the wood species and color as closely as possible. The hand-hewn timber project and the feeling of early American tradition - recycling used wood in this day and age is particularly satisfying, and this, of course, is what makes our business.

Living/Great Room

The materials were pressure washed and lightly sanded. The summer (long) timbers were antique hickory, and were 11" x 11" square, and were the length of the great room - 27 feet. It took 25 to 30 people approximately 3 hours to lift and install them.

The lattice system, which decorates the tops of the beams, is made of mixed species hand-hewn wood, and is 6" x 6".

The mantles are cut from hand-hewn timbers and are 8" x 12', and mostly oak. They were adjusted and cut on the site at the Woodmizer* sawmill that was located on the property for this particular job, compliments of the Woodmizer Company. It was necessary to have 10 people (including Paul DiMeo) to handle and install the mantles in a little over an hour.

The decorative corbels (a corbel is a carved piece of wood supporting a beam) under the coffered ceiling beams were hand carved from old hewn stock by the Vintage people. They were pre-cut to specification and were installed in about an hour.

*Vintage Beams & Timbers, Inc., has had a Woodmizer Sawmill installed on their company property for over 10 years providing the convenience of "on the job" cutting and sawing.
